The Breastfeeding Benefits Of Having A Doula

Having a doula on hand is not just about helping you through the later stages of pregnancy or even the birth itself, but also the time that comes afterward when, as a new mum or even when going through the experience for the second or third time, you will face some new and unfamiliar challenges.

Nobody will doubt that caring for a newborn baby is a challenging task, but some particular aspects are especially critical, with feeding being at the top of the list.

It is well known that breastmilk is by far the best option for feeding your new baby, with a long list of benefits over manufactured bottle-fed formula milk.

However, learning to breastfeed and becoming comfortable with it can be a challenge for many new mothers, especially the first time around. That is where having your own doula can come in so handy by providing crucial extra support.

This point was highlighted in a recent article in Psychology Today by Dr Georgia Wilkin, a psychologist dealing in maternal-related matters. She pointed out that using doulas has benefits that include better breastfeeding, as well as other gains such as shorter labour times.

She mentioned that specific benefits included “earlier and longer lactation”, as well as the simple fact that doulas are available to offer personal advice and support in a dedicated manner.

Many midwives are so busy on labour wards that they are unable to provide anything more than a few minutes of basic breastfeeding support. This leaves a massive gap in breastfeeding care and forces many mothers to reluctantly turn to bottle feeding.

The wonderful thing about having the expertise and knowledge of your doula is that you can approach the whole question of breastfeeding with greater confidence. Even before the birth, we will discuss your concerns and have a plan to overcome any challenges you may face with breastfeeding.

This gives you one less thing you worry about, whereas, especially as a first-time mother, it might otherwise be a matter of some anxiety.

By helping you get the hang of breastfeeding in those early days, a doula can not only ensure you are meeting your babies' needs on a practical level, but this will also give you more chance of being able to fully relax and enjoy the natural bonding process that this involves.
